Formula E and DTM – First Brace of Motorsport Events in 2018 for Schaeffler
17 May,2018
Electric mobility on the race track in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship and top-caliber touring car racing in the DTM – in 2018, Schaeffler is again involved in two internationally renowned motorsport series. Now the first brace of events this season is coming up for the technology group.
The ninth of twelve 2017/2018 Formula E races in Berlin marks the season’s pinnacle event for Schaeffler: a round with home soil feeling. At the previous events in recent years, German fans in the grandstands – including many Schaeffler employees – gave Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler special motivation. The two campaigners are traveling to Berlin in good shape. Title defender Lucas di Grassi finished each of the most recent three races as runner-up and local hero Daniel Abt celebrated his first victory in Formula E this year. Like last year, the race will be held on a 2.375-kilometer circuit on Berlin’s former Tempelhof airport.
In the DTM, Schaeffler brand ambassador Mike Rockenfeller managed a strong start to the season. In race two at the Hockenheimring, Rocky in his green-white Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM fought back from position nine on the grid to a second-place finish, which made him the best Audi campaigner of the weekend. For the second event, the DTM is traveling to the Lausitzring. The track near Klettwitz has been consistently on the calendar since the 2000 season – this year, though, the series will be racing on the 4.534-kilometer version for the first time again since 2004, marking new ground to be broken by Rockenfeller who entered the DTM in 2007.
Schaeffler and motorsport – a success story
In both series, Schaeffler looks back on a past with plenty of titles. Ever since the inaugural 2014/2015 Formula E season the technology group has been underscoring its position as a pioneer in electric mobility on the race track as well. Last year, Lucas di Grassi won the title. In the DTM, which uses conventional internal combustion engines, Schaeffler started to support drivers and teams with motorsport and technology know-how in the early years. Now, in the eighth year of its commitment, the company is the naming sponsor of the Schaeffler Audi – the 2011 and 2013 championship winning car.
